Harness or Collar? Which is Better for Your Dog?

There’s no single answer as to whether a collar or a harness is better for your dog. If your dog tends to pull on the leash, and it’s only attached to the collar, the pressure is distributed only on the cervical spine and larynx; in the worst-case scenario, this can affect their health. Puppies and young dogs, in particular, can suffer health problems if they pull hard on the leash to get where they’re going. Therefore, it’s important that your dog learns to walk on a loose leash from the start and receives rewards for doing so.

If you or your dog can’t avoid pulling on the leash in a given situation, a dog harness is recommended, as the pulling force is distributed more evenly and less pressure is put on the sensitive cervical vertebrae. A harness is especially recommended for sporting activities or for anxious dogs.

What should I look for in a dog harness?

The most important thing about a dog harness is the fit. If the straps are too wide or too tight for your dog’s furry snout, they won’t be able to move freely. The straps shouldn’t dig into the dog’s legs or get caught in the folds of their paws, as this would restrict their movement. Measuring Instructions for a Perfect Fit for Your Dog Harness

Before choosing a dog harness, take precise measurements of your dog to ensure the model fits perfectly and doesn’t rub or pinch. Use a flexible measuring tape and measure the following areas of your dog’s body:

• A: First, measure the circumference of your dog’s neck; It shouldn’t be too tight or too loose.
• B: Measure the circumference of your dog’s waist a hand’s width behind their front legs, or at the widest point of their chest.

Which dog harness is suitable for each purpose?

Lead harness

The lead harness is one of the classic dog harnesses. It’s popular for its multiple adjustment options and is available in two versions: a Y-harness or an H-harness. The design is similar in both versions: a chest bar and a back bar extend from the collar. The chest strap runs along the dog’s front legs and ends in a belly strap, which connects the back strap to the chest strap. Depending on the harness type, the shape of the back strap varies: Y-shaped or H-shaped. The pressure transferred to the harness when pulling on the leash is distributed differently across the dog’s body depending on the type. The Y-harness usually fits even more snugly against the dog’s body. This makes it (almost) impossible for the dog to escape.

Norwegian Harness

The Norwegian harness is especially popular among dog owners because of its ease of use: simply slip it over the dog’s head, buckle it, and you’re good to go. Dogs who feel restricted by the bar between their front legs in a leash harness will love the Norwegian harness. In this case, the chest strap runs horizontally across the chest. The Norwegian harness is fastened with the torso strap, which goes around the ribcage. A convenient lead strap is usually located on the back of the Norwegian harness.

Safety Harness

Some of our beloved furry friends are quite anxious and panic at loud noises or street noise. To protect your dog and your surroundings in these situations, we recommend a special panic harness.
